Dependency map

A dependency map asks GitHub what blocks each item in a search, or each card in a section, and draws the graph: blockers on the left, what they block to the right.

For a section, it maps the cards in the section (however deeply nested), in reading order, and updates as cards move in and out. Relationships come from GitHub’s blocked-by and blocking links, including items one step outside the set.

  • Ready marks open items that nothing open blocks.
  • Cycles are flagged (“A cycle”): items in one can’t start until it’s broken.
  • The critical path is the chain with the most open items, highlighted (“Critical path · 4”).
  • Click an item to see what blocks it and what it blocks, and Show on the board or Add to the board.
  • Items with no dependencies are listed below the graph.

Put the map on the board turns the map into cards and connectors: a card for each item not yet on the board, in columns beside the widget, and red “blocks” connectors for each dependency. Cards already on the board are connected where they are, and nothing is connected twice.

Like every widget, it asks as whoever’s looking: items you can’t read show as “Not visible to you”.
